Diabetes WA Foundation
A diagnosis of type 1 diabetes is a life-changing event, especially when it occurs at a young age.
To help young Western Australians cope with this diagnosis, Diabetes WA, in partnership with Princess Margaret Hospital, runs annual camps for them.
Run by health professionals, these specially structured Kids Camps provide a safe environment for children to develop a greater understanding of their condition and to build the confidence they will need to take the first crucial steps toward self-management. Importantly the children are able to develop friendships with others who share their diagnosis.
Throughout the camp the children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities, from games and sports to creative pursuits. They learn that type 1 diabetes is no barrier to them taking part in any activity they choose.
We run camps for young children aged between 8 and 12 and in 2015 we began a camp for teens.
